Football season is here; hell week might be over, pads are just getting issued, and its crunch time in more ways then one for our young Team4orce athletes. For many, it’s a time where unhealthy methods of weight loss for these young Team4orce athletes may be attempted. For most youth football leagues (Pop Warner or Junior All-American), divisions are strictly divided based not only age, but also on weight. So, as the weigh-ins approach, every effort should be made to establish a healthy weight loss plan and to be followed with the often overlooked, nutrient dense caloric on-season diet plan to keep up with the needs of the now active youth football player.
Children need to consume enough calories throughout the season and not depend on deprivation of food and/or fluids. Consulting a health professional that is qualified in the area or one of many online resources regarding this extremely important matter is strongly recommended.
Keys to the Game
The difference in an athlete’s weight before and immediately following a training session, for the most part, is a reflection of how much fluid was lost, rather than how much fat was burned.
As the person drinks fluids, a lot of that weight will come back. Depriving a person of fluids before and/or after a workout is a terrible strategy for weight loss. This can be very detrimental to their health and can even lead to injury and even in extreme cases, fatal consequences. Plastic suits, extra layers of clothing and other practices that don’t allow the body to properly cool during training can also be very harmful and damaging to the body.
To safely lose weight, Team4orce suggests looking to lose fat by simply burning more calories than you take in. In addition to team practices, many youngsters have enough energy to do some type of supplemental exercise, to burn more calories at the appropriate times.
Rather than just sitting around and playing video games or watching television, many can participate in safe and supervised activity. Simple drills or short bike rides or runs can be very beneficial and fun, as well as an opportunity to build on sport specific skill sets.
As for dieting, it is suggested, that the young athlete eats up to four to six small meals a day, every three hours or so. We must remember that snacking between meals helps to regulate metabolism and increases the body’s ability to burn calories. By combining a protein with a carbohydrate source, along with fiber and or healthy fat, the snack is not absorbed as readily, leaving a sense of fullness or satiety.

WORDS FROM THE COACH
We hear a lot about having heart, and we also hear a lot about training and trying to gain every advantage you can when competing in a winner take all sport or competitive event. In the case of Anthony Robles, he was all heart not to down play the fact that the kid can flat out wrestle! He had to give up an even playing field or in this case, a wrestling mat, to start every one of his 36 matches, because he wrestles with only one leg. I’d like to point out that he won every one of those 36 matches and Robles has won 122 matches in his career, and is eighth on Arizona State’s career list.
So next time you think about every advantage you could get, or you think about quitting and not giving it that Team4orce ALL approach, think for a moment, if you were given a disadvantage, would you train harder, would you be more disciplined, would you develop a rapacious hunger to be victorious?
Would you turn your disadvantage into an advantage, and use it as motivation to pick yourself up from the mat of life and hold your head up high? Well Anthony Robles has spoken with his actions and for that we say thank you for the inspiration and congratulations champ.
NOW LISTEN UP!!!!
Quotes from Anthony Robles
“I’ve dreamed about stepping on that stage a dozen times, and this whole year I’ve just been preparing for that moment.
“Wrestling’s been my life for nine years now. I don’t know what I’m going to do without competition now. But it’s been a blessing in my life. It’s taught me so much. It’s really helped me to become a man. And I’ll be forever grateful for that.” (foxsports.com)

The FILM ROOM

We will make this short and sweet since the content (the S.J.) is great stuff. Football season is here and we found this documentary and this particular part, part I to be insightful and just downright intriguing. So without any further delay…
The series will air subsequently on the web sites of the St. Louis Rams and National Football League.
“I wanted to give fans of the NFL a chance to see what a week of a season is really like,” said Jackson, one of the series’ executive producers. “It’s a story no one’s ever told, and I wanted to be the one to tell it.”
Filmed during Week 11 of the current NFL season, “A Week in the Life” showcases Jackson on and off the field from one Sunday to the next, chronicling how he and the Rams recover from a heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and prepare for a showdown with the NFC leading Atlanta Falcons.
The three episodes — “Recovery,” “Reunion” and “Game day” – provide an intimate look into the life of one of the NFL’s premier players in the thick of a season, showing never before seen details about Jackson’s recovery and rehabilitation, his relationships with teammates and coaches, moments with family, and more. It is a story of struggle and survival; of solitude and togetherness; of frustration and hope; and ultimately, for Steven Jackson, of faith.
“Steven and the Rams gave us unprecedented access,” said David Neiman, president of Athlete Interactive and co-executive producer of the series. “The result is one of the most intimate, personal looks into NFL life that’s ever been shown before.”
“A Week in the Life With Steven Jackson” is a co-production of Shock N Awe and Athlete Interactive. (Total running time: 32 minutes.)
